Your instructor, Denise Turner, has been teaching this course for more than 15 years, first with Government Institutes and now with the Aarcher Institute. This 2.5 day Chemistry for Non-chemists course developed by Dr. Turner does not require attendees to have any background in chemistry and is presented by two instructors with more than fifty years combined field expertise in working with chemicals that affect our everyday lives.

Starting with very basic chemical terminology, this program provides simple, straightforward explanations of the chemistry behind important environmental topics such as:
  • Material safety data sheets
    • Health effects, solubility, boiling points, density, specific gravity, LD50s, etc., plus an explanation of why this data is important
  • Sampling and analysis
    • Sampling plans, SOPs, TCLP, BOD, VOCs, BTEX, etc.
  • Chemical compatibility
    • Reactivity, corrosivity, toxicity, flammability; learn to use an EPA tool to determine chemical compatibility
  • Chemical and physical reactions
    • Classes of chemical reactions, common reactions, reaction rates
  • Organic compounds and how to classify them
    • Hydrocarbons, alcohols, halogenated solvents, peroxides, ethers, amines, PCBs, DDT, etc.
  • Radioactivity
    • Why are some materials radioactive, E = MC2, isotopes, radiocarbon dating, nuclear reactors, fusion reactions that power the sun, etc.
  • Metals
    • Properties of metals, acids, bases, salts, pH, soil chemistry, and various analytical techniques
  • The unique chemistry of water
    • Why does ice float?
  • Chemical measurement (metric units, PPM, PPB)
The science behind many global environmental problems are also explained, including:
  • The greenhouse effect – it really is happening!
  • Ozone depletion
  • Biomagnification/bioaccumulation
  • Radioactive waste disposal
  • Halogenated solvents and environmental toxicity
  • Indoor air quality
  • Waste and wastewater treatment processes
Case studies and real world examples are used throughout the course to make the chemistry of everyday life more understandable. Attending this course will improve your ability to comprehend key data found in material safety data sheets, laboratory analytical reports, and environmental assessments. It will also help you use and dispose of chemicals more safety, both at work and at home.
