Buildings account for around 40% of the energy used in the U.S. each year. Reduction of a buildings electricity and fuel consumption can reduce a building’s carbon footprint and pollution. As well as at the same time support sustainability and save money.

Identifying suitable opportunities for energy conservation requires an understanding of the primary tools and techniques for conducting an energy conservation opportunity assessment, and learning methodologies for evaluating and prioritizing the available opportunities.

Commercial building owners who adopt aggressive energy management programs often have the potential to reduce energy consumption in their buildings by as much as 50%. The first step in any such program is to perform an energy conservation opportunity assessment.

The Energy Conservation Opportunity Assessment (ECOA) course provides participants with the tools necessary to perform Level 1 and Level 2 energy accounting and audits for commercial buildings. The course is taught by instructors with deep experience performing practical, on-the-ground ECOAs for a wide variety of commercial facility types.

A Level 1 ECOA, or walk-through analysis, includes an in-depth evaluation of energy bills to identify usage trends and characteristics; and a building survey with the end goal of identifying low-cost or no-cost energy conservation opportunities.

In addition, a Level 2 ECOA, or energy survey and analysis, includes a detailed building survey to determine more accurately the amount of energy use that can be attributed to each of the various building subsystems, such as the heating and air conditioning systems, building envelope, and the electrical and lighting systems. A Level 2 ECOA will also help the building owner to identify and prioritize more costly building modifications that typically have a simple payback of around five years or less.

Participants will leave this course with the foundation for understanding and performing ECOAs at a wide variety of facility types.
